Rob Freeman

Rob claims he's never had a ski holiday, just a series of work trips that happen to involve skiing, checking out runs, restaurants, bars and spas for newspapers, ski and flight magazines, books and websites. He labours uncomplainingly - if it's a crime to be dedicated, he says, he pleads guilty as charged.

He was reluctant to go on his first skiing trip, anxious that it was interfering with his love of all things football, but was completely hooked on skiing from day one. It has been a dilemma ever since as he weaves work trips to the mountains around important fixtures for his team.

Working as a national newspaper journalist, Rob quickly combined his writing skills with his newfound sport and this excellent combination has taken him around the world, skiing in the world's best known resorts as well as unknown gems. And he has been lucky enough to have skied many wonderful resorts, following the tracks of many great skiers including downhill superstar Franz Klammer and powder guru Josef Mallaun. From them he has learned much - most importantly, he says, to respect the mountains and savour every moment on the slopes.

Rob is a qualified ski instructor and was for many years a senior journalist on the Daily Mail. He still writes frequently for the paper's travel website, TravelMail, in addition to other leading national newspapers such as The Times and Daily Telegraph and is a regular writer for the Skier and Snowboarder magazine. He is something of an authority on skiing in Austria and has written the pocket guide Snowfinder Austria.

More recently, Rob has extended his skills to non-ski travel writing and is always looking for fresh challenges.
