The Alpine village of Galtür in the Austrian Tirol has some breathtaking news that will come as a huge relief to hayfever sufferers - the pollen count is minimal - all summer long.
For the 17th summer running the village at the head of the Paznaun Valley is celebrating its status as a health resort with a negligible pollen count, verified by Central Office in Vienna.
And that means great news for outdoor-loving sportspeople who can enjoy such sports as running, mountain biking, tennis, hiking and climbing in the pure clear air of Galtür. No sneezing, itchy eyes, coughing or wheezing and a perfect destination for an exhilarating summer holiday in the mountains.
It's all down to Galtür's position at 1600m in the Silvretta mountain range of The Alps, a broad high valley with good airflow and distinct variations in day and night temperatures preventing a build-up of pollen.
Said Andreas Steibl, Paznaun-Ischgl Tourist Director:
Those with allergies are able to take a deep breath here as the air in Galtür is almost free of bothersome pollen. Galtür was named the first official health resort of the Tirol in April 1997 and is proud of the title. Physical exercise in this healthy mountain air is recommended for a relaxing and regenerative holiday.
New this summer in Galtür is a bouldering area for children and beginners at Silvapark, which is one of the biggest bouldering parks in Europe. Other attractions include climbing, via ferrata, e-biking, hiking and guided walks to discover the special flora and fauna of the area.
The neighbouring village of Ischgl is well known as a snowy metropolis in winter and draws equally energetic fans in the summer who delight in the variety of sports on offer. For example there are more than 1000kms of mountain bike tours making it one of the largest and most diverse bike stomping grounds in The Alps with easy excursions for beginners and families to extended day tours and mountain marathons for the dedicated.
E-bikes and motorbikes make up the trio of biking opportunities in Ischgl. E-bikes have battery packs which give extra pedal power on inclines; motorbikes are for hire at the High-Bike Test Center and make for easy riding on more than 30 mountain passes and thousands of hairpin bends on a range of recommended day tours.
Family hotspots in Paznaun are Kappl and See, at the entrance to the valley, with the emphasis on fun and adventure for young families. Chill and thrill are the watchwords of these twin villages with tranquil areas for play, swimming, culture and nature being matched with adventurous programmes of exploration and racing.
Holidaymakers must make sure they take advantage of the Silvretta Card All Inclusive which is given to all Paznaun guests. The card offers a great range of free services, plus discounts on others eg equipment hire. FREE are activities in the Kids Club programme; guided themed walks; all cablecars and chairlifts; swimming pools in Ischgl and Galtür; the sports and water park in See; local road tolls and buses; entry to the Alpinarium in Galtür and the museum in Ischgl.
